The side piece is attached to the small upper rings which let the bit to "hang" in the horse's mouth.
Reduces the risk of pressure in the palate and provides a balanced weight distribution on the tongue and jaw.
The small upper shanks also means that the bite is more still and prevents the bite from moving.
