A cavesson acts directly on the horse's nasal bridge that is directly connected to the neck which makes the cavesson very effective to bend the neck of the horse. The neck is connected to the back and vertebrae, all the way to the base of the tail. That makes the cavesson an accurate and effective tool to obtain correct bending throughout the horse's body. With a snaffle or sidepull there is a risk that only the horse's neck is bent sideways.
The cavesson is a sharp tool depending on how it is manufactured, a fixed iron or a chain is sharper than a cavesson where the nosepart is made out of only leather. For an iron and a chain the sharpness is determined buy the thickness and how much the iron / chain is lined. That does not mean that a cavesson with alot of padding is automatically better. If the cavesson is sharper it becomes more accurate and precise, and we want the horse to understand us as quickly and clear as possible. We should choose the tool that best can explain to our horse what we want it to do.
